Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy Onassis was the wife of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.
As First Lady, Kennedy devoted much of her time to planning social events at the White House and other state properties. She often invited artists, writers, scientists, poets, and musicians to mingle with politicians, diplomats, and statesmen. She also began to let guests at The White House drink cocktails, to give the mansion a more relaxed feeling.Perhaps due to her skill at entertaining, Kennedy proved quite popular among international dignitaries.
During her husband's presidency, Jacqueline Kennedy became a symbol of fashion for women all over the world.She retained French-born American fashion designer and Kennedy family friend Oleg Cassini in the fall of 1960 to create an original wardrobe for her as First Lady. From 1961 to late 1963, Cassini dressed her in many of her most iconic ensembles, including her Inauguration Day fawn coat and Inaugural gala gown as well as many outfits for her visits to Europe, India and Pakistan. In her first year in the White House, Kennedy spent $45,446 more on fashion than the $100,000 annual salary her husband earned as president.
Jacqueline is a style icon not because of what she wore, but how she wore it. She liked to match single-color schemes and was always groomed.Long before it became fashionable she would wear Chanel jackets with a pair of jeans. The items she picked would go straight to the fashion trends which solidified her influence in the fashion world.
